HEALTH AND SAFETY

“The most important element in sport is the people involved, whether they are taking part, volunteering, coaching or paid employees. The success of sport, in terms of helping people achieve their potential, making the most of existing talent, and attracting new people to sport relies on putting people – their safety, wellbeing and welfare – at the centre of what sport does.” Tanni Grey-Thompson, 11-time Paralympic Champion

We believe sport has a duty of care to its athletes. The health and safety of our members is of the upmost importance to our organization.

AthletesCAN has brought together an Athlete Health & Safety Advisory Committee to develop a system wide assessment model that will permit Canadian athletes and system stakeholders to achieve national and international excellence while fostering a safe and supportive environment for the holistic development of the athletes.

As part of this process, AthletesCAN is engaging experts on player safety, mental health and wellbeing, protection of youth athletes, governance, harassment and abuse in sport, concussions, and more to determine existing best practices, gaps, and recommendations to establish a proactive and responsive system.

AthletesCAN has created a working group to provide recommendations to Sport Canada on the National High Performance Sport Strategy currently being developed, to ensure the athlete voice is represented and that the holistic development and support of the athlete is a priority. AthletesCAN also consults with sport partners on a case by case basis to review and identify gaps in this area.
