Supporting Canadian Athletes

KidsCAN

KidsCAN School Day is an opportunity for school children in the Forum’s host community to meet with national team athletes, try a variety of sports and learn about the importance of physical activity and healthy lifestyles. Since its inception in 2006, AthletesCAN’s KidsCAN School Day events have enabled over 275 national team athletes including Olympians and Paralympians, to reach over 22,000 school children from Whitehorse, Yukon to Fredericton, New Brunswick with messages of inspiration and determination.

Testimonials

What a positive experience it was for 700 of our intermediate students, who got the opportunity to interact with some of Canada’s most outstanding athletes during KidsCAN School Day. The event was flawlessly managed; the athletes were incredibly engaging and superb role models. I have received tremendous feedback from teachers and administrators who accompanied the kids and highly recommend the event to anyone who has the opportunity to participate.

It is always fulfilling to give back to the community, especially kids. If I had an opportunity like KidsCAN School Day as a kid I don’t think I would be able to sleep for at least a couple days before and after! What better way to give kids a passion for physical activity than to let them play sports with the top amateur athletes in the country. It was also great to see the passion the athletes had when working with the kids.

I had the most unbelievable experience at the KidsCAN School Day this year. I could see myself years ago in all those incredibly excited faces when I was just dreaming of one day becoming an Olympian. I would have done anything to have met our Canadian athletes at that age. The inspiration and motivation that KidsCAN School Day gave all of us at the end of the day meant more to me than any medal. I didn’t think it was possible, but it made me love sport even more. Working and playing with those kids really showed me how truly powerful and effective sport can be in bringing us all together to build healthier, stronger communities across our country.

During my time in Whitehorse I had the privilege to visit local and outlining schools during the KidsCAN School Day and to be quite honest I’m not sure who was more motivated after our visits – the athletes or the students. These visits were some of the most profound speaking engagements I’ve ever had the honour of participating in. My fondest memory was the fact that neither the presenter nor the audience wanted the sessions to end which was most evident at the completion of final visit where we stayed for well over an hour playing indoor soccer with the students. I can’t think of a better way to end any public speaking session as an athlete!
