AthletesCAN is currently seeking an Interim Executive Director for maternity leave contract.

AthletesCAN has a powerful vision where the collective athlete voice is a central part of decision making in an athlete centered sport system. Our mission is simple: As the collective voice for Canadian athletes, AthletesCAN influences a sport system that empowers our athletes to achieve their full potential on the field of play and beyond.  In fulfilling our mission, we believe in and foster a core set of values in all that we do – leadership, courage, transparency, and excellence.

Led by a committed group of current and retired national team athletes – AthletesCAN benefits from a rich history. Over two decades ago, passionate trail blazers came together to challenge the Canadian sport system. Over the years, AthletesCAN has invested in athlete leadership development through effective representation and education. The organization has created resources to build and formalize athlete feedback mechanisms across the sport system. As a result of strengthening strategic partnerships both within and outside of the system, AthletesCAN has continued to pioneer innovative ways to ensure inclusive decision-making by informing, educating, and advocating for an athlete centered sport system.

 
POSITION SUMMARY

Starting:                      August/September 2016
Position:                      Interim Executive Director
Location:                     Canada
Type of Position:         Flex Maternity Leave Contract, up to 12 months
Reports to:                  Board of Directors
Compensation:           Commensurate with experience

AthletesCAN serves an important and unique purpose in the sport system. There is a deep desire to see the organization grow, expand, and flourish as the collective voice of Canadian athletes. In support of the objectives of AthletesCAN, the scope of the Interim Executive Director position may vary based on experience and has the flexibility to range from a part time to full time contract.  The successful candidate will be a proven leader with excellent interpersonal and communications skills, who can work independently and as a team player, thrives in a dynamic work environment, is experienced in the management of a not-for-profit organization, is a passionate champion of amateur sport in Canada and embraces the values of AthletesCAN.

 

STRATEGIC AREAS OF FOCUS

The 2016-2020 Strategic Planning process outlines the following Strategic Priorities:

Leadership – Develop and deliver best in class athlete leadership education and resources to build sport system capacity and foster top performances on and off the field of play.

Representation – Ensure sport system stakeholders have the tools and structure necessary to support an athlete-centered environment promoting the holistic development of its participants in safe and healthy manner.

Excellence – Maximize the financial and operational performance of our own business, of partners we invest in, and of the system, to ensure we provide the maximum possible value to our athletes and the Canadian sport system.

Specific outcomes for the 2016-2017 fiscal include the creation of a standardized Athlete Agreement complete with an implementation, education and communications strategy; a standardized coaching report card as part of the Health & Safety Committee objectives and formal athlete feedback coordination as part of the federal review of the targeted funding model.  We will continue to promote and deliver leadership resources both online and through the annual AthletesCAN Forum; explore new opportunities for revenue generation; and serve our members on important issues to ensure their rights are represented and respected.  Proven success and leadership in these areas will be considered an asset when reviewing potential candidates.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in sport administration, business administration, public policy, education or communication, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in sponsorship, marketing and membership program development is an asset.
  • Bilingual (preferred but not required).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail, the ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines with no impact on performance.
  • Self motivated, proficient, and reliable.
  • Possess the ability and eagerness to work within a team environment.
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Office and financial experience required.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors in a senior leadership position.
  • Proven senior leadership experience with a not-for-profit organization is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Canadian sport system.
  • Demonstrated passion for high performance sport.
  • Experience in high performance sport as an athlete, coach or an administrator is an asset.
  • Proven ability to manage and oversee administration & operations, corporate finances, and human resources.
  • Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to manage staff and work with volunteers.
  • Experience as a senior manager leading complex, detailed and time sensitive projects.
  • Political acuity to maintain effective relationships with senior level bureaucrats and political leaders.

5-10 weekends annually
