MEET YOUR ATHLETE REPRESENTATIVE

STEFAN WAPLES
SPEED SKATING

Years on National Team: I represented Canada as a member of the national long track speed skating team for eight years. Specializing in the middle/long distance events early on in my career and transitioning to the team pursuit and mass start events later on in my career.

Term as Athlete Rep: In 2014 I assumed the role of athlete rep representing long track speed skating in the west. I maintained that role until after my retirement from high performance sport in 2018. After a brief period of no formal responsibilities I took over the role of athlete director on the board of directors for Speed Skating Canada in June of 2018.

Career Highlights: I am proud to have competed in four Olympic trials and to have represented Canada in world cups, and world championship events.

Rep Philosophy: I struggled to make the national team, I struggled to make world cups, and as a result I was used to fighting for myself. I used the lessons I had learned in fighting for myself to help fight for other athletes and eventually found myself in an athlete rep role. Moving through the sport system, from off the team, to on the team, to an athlete rep and now as a board member I’ve gained a lot of perspective. I’ve realized that everyone who is involved with sport genuinely wants to make it better and it’s the approaches that can be divisive. I to keep this in mind whenever I’m speaking with someone about sport, there are so many perspectives and approaches but the common goal of improving sport is always a constant. I view my role as an athlete director is to try to combine as many of these approaches and perspectives as possible and watch my sport, and all sport improve.
