AthletesCAN Statement Re: IPC Decision on IWBF Transitional Period for Non-Eligible Athletes

April 14, 2021 - It is with extreme disappointment that AthletesCAN learned the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) April 12, 2021 news that their request for a transitional period for players deemed non-eligible in the Classification Reassessment Process had been denied by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board. At the centre of this year’s long governance dispute and those most drastically impacted are the athletes who have made sacrifices, represented their countries proudly, and helped grow the game in the decades they have given to the sport. We reiterate the need for effective athlete consultation in these matters and the importance of effective and independent athlete representation. AthletesCAN fully supports wheelchair basketball athletes both at home and across the globe during this time.
