AthletesCAN unveils 2016-2020 strategic plan

After extensive consultation with more than 60 athletes, board members, past board members and sport stakeholders the AthletesCAN strategic planning committee and board of directors are proud to unveil AthletesCAN’s 2016-2020 strategic plan.

“As every part of the Canadian sport system clamours to achieve higher levels of excellence with better financial bottom lines, we took the opportunity of a new strategic planning cycle to narrow our focus,” says Josh Vander Vies, president of AthletesCAN. “Issues in sport are developing rapidly. It is critical that the Canadian national team athlete voice be central to the system and as accurate and independent as possible.”

As an athlete-focused, system-led and performance driven organization, AthletesCAN believes that accountability is a key tenet of any publicly funded organization. The strategic planning committee created key performance indicators based on AthletesCAN’s three pillars — leadership, representation and organizational excellence — to guide AthletesCAN’s operations and to keep it accountable to its membership.

The plan updates AthletesCAN’s mission, vision and values to ensure they align with its role as the only organization in Canada that represents all national team athletes, including Olympic, Paralympic, Commonwealth, Pan/Parapan American, Aboriginal and world championship athletes, among others.

This plan outlines how AthletesCAN will continue to pioneer innovative ways to ensure inclusive decision-making by informing, educating, and advocating for an athlete-centered sport system.
