AthletesNOW – December 2018 Edition

With the holiday season upon us and the New Year just around the corner, we’re taking a few moments to reflect on the last year and our journey together.

In 2018, #CDNAthleteLeaders took on the Year of the Games. It’s been one of our busiest and most successful years as the #AthleteVoice and it’s because of you!

Check out some of our favourite HIGHLIGHTS!

We could not have done this without YOU and your fellow national team athletes and elected leaders; our Board of Directors.

AthletesCAN welcomed FOUR new board members at 26th Annual General Meeting

With athlete representatives from more than 50 sports present, AthletesCAN hosted its 2017-2018 Annual General Meeting and Elections on September 23, 2018 in Ottawa, ON.

“On behalf of the association and our members, I’d like to thank outgoing board members, Vice President Thea Culley (Field Hockey) and Maria Samson (Rugby) for their valued contributions to the success and mission of AthletesCAN over the last four years. We wish them all the best and look forward to continuing to effect change with them as part of our strong alumni”, says AthletesCAN President Dasha Peregoudova.

Out of ten athletes nominated, five were elected to the board including returning board member and Treasurer, Pierre-Luc Laliberte (CanoeKayak) who now begins his second term. AthletesCAN welcomes four new board members including: Allison Forsyth (Alpine Skiing), Liam Smedley (CanoeKayak), Mercedes Nicoll (Snowboard), and Joy SpearChief-Morris (Athletics).

Allison Forsyth, Alpine Skiing

"I am incredibly honoured to be among such a powerful group of representatives on the board. Personally I am most looking forward to diving in to the work to support the prevention of sexual abuse in sport. That, along with all the many diverse issues facing Canadian athletes is why we come together, work together, and make changes together- to create a future that would otherwise not exist for our athletes."

Liam Smedley, CanoeKayak

“I'm absolutely elated and humbled to be elected to the board by so many talented athletes I respect so much. This is a huge opportunity and I intend to unload a lot of enthusiasm into my role. I really believe if the athlete body works together as one team, we have no limits for achieving our goals for athletes in Canada.”

Mercedes Nicoll, Snowboard

“Having spent more than half of my life fighting for athlete rights I finally feel at home on the AthletesCAN Board. To be voted in by the members is a huge honour and opportunity that I do not take lightly. I’m excited to listen, learn and give athletes in Canada a voice.”

Joy SpearChief-Morris, Athletics

“I am excited to be welcomed as a new member of the Board of Directors for AthletesCAN. I am looking forward to being able to learn from this amazing group of athlete leaders and see how I can be involved in making an impact on sport in Canada.”

2018 BEHIND THE SCENES: THE ATHLETE VOICE AT WORK

Ever wonder how AthletesCAN is working to represent your best interests? Here is a sneak peek at some of the behind the scenes work we did in 2018 and continue to do on your behalf:

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2019

To continue the momentum of the #AthleteVoice in Canada and internationally in 2019, AthletesCAN will be engaging you, our members, on important issues…and we’re not skipping a beat.

Keep an eye out for our January membership drive, New Year’s resolution check in and the 2019 Baseline Prevalence Study, a survey we’re encouraging both our current and retired athletes to complete to establish a snapshot of the current high performance athlete experience with abuse, harassment, discrimination and maltreatment in sport. It will prove invaluable in helping the Canadian sport system establish a way forward in addressing safe sport issues – creating a safe and positive environment for you to reach your goals on and off the field of play.

From the bottom of our maple leaf shaped hearts, thank you for everything you do as #CDNAthleteLeaders. We look forward to continuing our work together as we strive to strengthen #TheCollective and build a sport culture we can all be proud of.

Love from your AthletesCAN Family!
