Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee: Call for Expression of Interest

November 30, 2020 - AthletesCAN is accepting expressions of interest from current and retired Canadian national team athletes for the newly formed Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee.

In June 2020, AthletesCAN acknowledged it needs to do better and to actively fight alongside BIPOC athletes to demand and effect change. One pledge of many included creating a committee to hold AthletesCAN accountable to our Diversity, Equity, and Access Policy, and to help us meet additional objectives. A full description of the committee role and tentative mandate can be found here. We expect the mandate will evolve when the committee is finalized with input from its members.

We are proud to announce 3-time Olympian Neville Wright as the inaugural Chair of the Diversity and Equity Advisory Committee. A passionate advocate for the rights of BIPOC athletes, Neville was instrumental in his involvement in the Safe Sport Working Group that advised on Dr. Gretchen Kerr and colleagues’ landmark 2019 Maltreatment Study. Neville brings a unique and vital perspective to the committee as a 15-year member of Team Canada in both summer and winter sport.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of something to help create change and a difference for present and future athletes” said Neville Wright. “I feel that every athlete contributes in their own way, whether through discussion, using their platform to speak and educate, seeking resources and advice, or advocating for themselves. I believe if there is something in place to support them in this fight there could be a rise in athletes in the BIPOC community stepping up to leadership, speaking out more and/or standing up for what is right. Especially if they know that there is an entity in place to support them.”

Interested athletes are asked to complete an online expression of interest application. AthletesCAN is striving for inclusion and is committed to de-centring the white lens not only within the organization, but within the sport community. We encourage applicants from the BlPOC community as well as the LGBTQ+ community to apply, regardless of age, ability, or gender. For more information please contact [email protected].
