October 10, 2019 (Ottawa, ON) – AthletesCAN and Respect Group are pleased to announce the official launch of the Respect in Sport training for Canada’s senior national team athletes. This partnership will enable AthletesCAN members to access free education to recognize, understand and respond to issues of bullying, abuse, harassment and discrimination and to assist athletes in supporting a safe, healthy and respectful environment.

“Athletes are at the centre of all sport and educating them on the prevention of maltreatment should be a top priority,” says Sheldon Kennedy, Co-Founder of Respect Group. “Furthermore, our National level athletes are the true leaders within their sport community so, in my mind, they need the tools to be well-informed role models.”

The training will be available to senior national team athletes from more than 60 sports under the AthletesCAN umbrella. National sport organizations will be able to track program completion through an online portal supported by Respect Group.

“Athletes maximize their ability to excel, influence and inspire on and off the field of play when they are equipped with the appropriate skills and tools,” says AthletesCAN President, Dasha Peregoudova. “Thanks to Respect Group, we are able to provide our members with current and best-in-class education to proactively deal with the risk of and incidents related to abuse, harassment and discrimination.”

The topics covered by the Respect in Sport Program include but are not limited to:

  • Power Dynamics
  • Legal Responsibility and “Duty of Care”
  • Hazing
  • Physical Development
  • Preventing Bullying, Abuse, Harassment and Discrimination (BAHD)
  • Mental Health Outcomes Due to BAHD Behaviours
  • Concussion and Injury Management
  • Positive Emotions

“It’s now more important (and easier!) than ever before to be educated on best practices associated with safe sport in Canada,” says Olympic Champion wrestler and safe sport advocate Erica Wiebe. “This partnership puts resources directly in the athletes’ hands to be better informed stakeholders and better prepared to pursue excellence on the field of play.”

Athletes will hear from other athletes, coaches, subject matter experts and put their knowledge to the test through an interactive learning platform. Identified members will be provided with access to the training beginning October 24th.
